In light of our January focus on prayer and fasting at New Life, I
wanted to give you a possible resource or approach to your daily reading
and prayer for your prayer journals. It's not a new approach, nor one
that is original to me, but I think it could be helpful to you.
It's called the S.O.A.P. plan, and is based on recording four things each
day. The first is the Scripture you read (S). The second is any
Observations (O) you make about the text. What do you notice about the
passage? Is there anything that is repeated that is important and
catches your attention?
The third aspect is Application (A), and really deals with what you want
to do as a result of what you've read. How can you make the text come
alive in your life? What changes do you need to make to apply this
truth to your life? The final aspect is Prayer (P). This is a place to
write down your prayer in response to what you've read, observed, and
want to apply.
It's a pretty simple format, but highly effective especially if you're
just developing the reading and praying habit. Below is my S.O.A.P. plan
from today based on our reading in 1 Peter 5.
